30 Days Journal - Day 12

I am a terrible journal-er. As an exercise to become better, I decided to do a 30 day journal challenge for myself. Just like during my quarantine, I am using Isolation Journals for daily journal prompt.

Prompt: When was the last time you experienced art that transcended enjoyment and overwhelmed you with its power. How would you translate that magic into words? If this hasn’t been an experience you’ve had—make it up.

A few posts ago, I discussed about my relationship with drawing. The last time I experienced art was actually watching dances. Growing up I have always loved watching dance programs. I was a loyal audience of “So You Think You Can Dance” and “America’s Best Dance Crew” (this really dates me), to this date I still watch a lot of dance videos and dance competitions. Am I a good dancer - no. Apparently, watching someone else dance doesn’t make you a good dancer.

The last time I watch a really good dance video is just watching a kpop dancer dance. I won’t post it but let’s just say he’s the main dancer of the biggest male kpop group in Korea. When everyone of his teammates are dancing, and they’re all great dancers, your eyes will still fall on the main dancer. He’s very fluid but with so much power and strength that you know every fibre in his body is used with precision and control. He looks light as a feather but for anyone who attempts that move you know he skilfully applied the right amount of strength to make the same move everyone else doing better. He’s expressions are also just perfect for the emotion the dance is suppose to evoke. I am not a professional dancer (see above), but as a person who loves visual art, I will say watching his is like watching an artwork come alive. Okay, enough fangirl-ing over a pop star.

Dances are something that can provide you with so much imagination. Sometimes it feels like these humans are defying the law of gravity and doing the absolute impossible. I really wish they get paid more for this profession.
